In Spirited Away there is a character, named Aogaeru, who is somewhat of an antagonist. His first interaction with the story is when he scares Chihiro causing her to gasp and break the invisibility spell on her. Due to this, Aogaeru is a key plot device; however, it is very clear what he has been doing beforehand and once we find out what he does later, it shows us what kind of job he is working. This is his brief story:
Aogaeru works for Yubaba (the witch who runs the bathhouse) and we know from what he says that she was previously demanding Haku back. Haku is her henchman that is trapped because she stole his true name. Aogaeru tells Haku that she is searching for him and now that he has returned, must go see her at once to receive orders. When Aogaeru jumps up to tell Haku this, it scares Chihiro, who, as a human from the human world, has never seen a talking frog. Once she breaks the spell Aogaeru also gasps in surprise that there is a human in the spirit world and announces it. This is the cause for Chihiro to run and become entangled with all the characters in the story, its the reason she gets her story, instead of being sent home immediately by Haku. After the initial interaction Aogaeru tells his boss that Chihiro is in the bathhouse, starting Yubaba’s search for her, wanting to turn her into a pig. Aogaeru continues working for Yubaba and running the workers who he is responsible for, all the while keeping an eye out for Chihiro. Later on Aogaeru gets eaten by the character No Face, he is the first character eaten by the lonely creature. Due to him dropping things as he is eaten, another character comes in to check and this starts the praising of No Face. Aogaeru is trapped inside the spirit until Chihiro rescues him. He is an antagonist because it was him jumping that scared Chihiro, his loyalty to the witch that got Haku caught, his greed that started No Face’s eating spree, however he was necessary to make the plot work and deserves to be recognized.
